Fort Frogger Diplomatic Entry

Cinnamon Bun

Fort Frogger Diplomatic Entry is a pivotal reconnaissance action in which Broccoli Bunch approaches the undead Fort Frogger with Amaryllis and gains admission through improvised diplomacy rather than force. Faced with a ruined gate, armed Skeleton Knights, a fortress crowded with undead, and the formidable Bone Hound Throat Ripper, Broccoli converts an apparent combat encounter into a tea invitation, revealing how his unusual mixture of optimism, social audacity, and practical magic can open spaces that violence would leave inaccessible.

Mission and Setting

Fort Frogger is first presented as a dangerous military stronghold rather than a neutral meeting place. Broccoli Bunch and Amaryllis hide near the crest of a hill and observe its entrance: the large wooden doors stand open, one torn from its huge metal hinges, while the courtyard is occupied mostly by grenoil skeletons and several undead figures resembling centaurs. Two larger skeletons in plate armor guard the gate, each carrying a sword roughly the size of Broccoli.

The immediate objective is limited but consequential. Broccoli and Amaryllis have been sent to scout the region, and Broccoli judges that they have already accomplished much of that task; what remains is to see inside the fort. Fighting through the entrance would expose them to the two Skeleton Knights and the far larger undead force within. The reconnaissance therefore depends on gaining access without turning the mission into an assault.

Choosing Diplomacy Over Force

Broccoli proposes that he go forward alone and attempt what he calls “the nice way.” Amaryllis treats the plan as nearly suicidal, but Broccoli reasons that even her considerable strength would not solve the larger problem created by the undead inside the fortress. If his approach fails, the pair can withdraw to Green Hold and report to Gabriel. The plan is consequently not a claim that the danger is harmless; it is a calculated substitution of social risk for battlefield risk.

Before approaching the gate, Broccoli fires a cleaning spell at himself, stripping away the mud and grime that had served as camouflage. He then touches Amaryllis and cleans her as well. The spell has a practical effect, removing the concealment that had helped them hide, but it also marks a deliberate change in presentation: Broccoli is no longer approaching the fortress as a muddied infiltrator but as a recognizable representative of the Exploration Guild.

The Skeleton Knights spot him before he reaches them. They shift their swords into a guarded position, yet do not attack. Broccoli stops at a distance, waves, identifies himself as Broccoli Bunch of the Exploration Guild, and asks to speak with the fort’s leader or boss, adding an uncertain animal-like greeting. The knights answer without speech. Instead, they pause together and step aside, opening the path into the courtyard. Their silent movement transforms the gate from a barrier into an invitation, although Broccoli still has to ask whether he is actually being allowed inside.

The Tea-Based Audience

Inside the fortress, Broccoli and Amaryllis encounter a man accompanied by the enormous undead dog Throat Ripper. Broccoli immediately introduces himself and asks to be friends, prompting Amaryllis to strike him on the back of the head and replace his blunt greeting with a more formal inquiry about whether the man is the lord of the estate. The contrast establishes the pair’s complementary diplomatic styles: Broccoli relies on direct warmth and spontaneity, while Amaryllis supplies status-conscious restraint when the situation demands it.

The encounter becomes more dangerous when the identity of the guard is revealed. Throat Ripper is a Bone Hound of the Long Slumber, and the tension surrounding the creature is palpable enough to feel like a physical threat. The dog’s tail cuts grooves into the stone floor, and its growl makes the ground vibrate. In that moment, the meeting appears close to becoming a confrontation.

Broccoli responds with the most disarming resource available to him: tea. He asks whether the man likes it, then offers milk-thistle for the liver, chamomile for relaxation, and honey. When Amaryllis is asked for the backpack, she explains that she stored it and can retrieve it. The exchange gives the host a concrete, ordinary subject on which to respond, replacing the abstract danger of two armed parties with the domestic question of what kind of tea should be served.

The decisive reversal occurs when the man places a hand on Throat Ripper’s snout and stops the growling. He asks what kind of tea Broccoli has, and Broccoli explains that he carries a kettle but only enough equipment for one cup. The host studies Broccoli’s earnest expression, looks to Amaryllis, and permits them to enter, telling them not to mind Throat Ripper because he is a good boy. The fortress thus admits the explorers not after a display of strength but after a small act of hospitality has been proposed and accepted.

Consequences and Narrative Significance

The entry gives Broccoli and Amaryllis access to the dark halls of Fort Frogger and moves the mission from concealed observation toward direct contact with the fortress’s leadership. The host leads them to a carpeted lounge beneath a chandelier and orders a skeleton servant to bring two chairs, establishing that the undead stronghold possesses not only military defenses but also domestic and social spaces. The movement from broken gate and armed guards to a furnished sitting room embodies the event’s central value shift: a site that initially appears to demand combat becomes, at least temporarily, a place for an audience.

Cleaning magic is important to the action beyond its ordinary utility. Earlier, it is defined as a skill that improves the ability to clean as its rank rises, and Broccoli has already used cleaning magic offensively, firing it into a ghost until the ghost bursts apart. At Fort Frogger, however, the same magic functions as self-presentation and mutual preparation. It removes mud from Broccoli and Amaryllis before their approach, allowing them to appear openly and making the spell part of diplomacy rather than merely an instrument of purification or attack.

The scene also reflects the book’s recurring collision between game-like systems and social improvisation. Broccoli’s world identifies dangers through Insight, class-aligned actions can unlock skills such as Cute, and dungeons are categorized by levels, yet the Fort Frogger encounter cannot be solved by statistics alone. Broccoli’s success depends on interpreting the situation, choosing an unconventional action, and offering a shared ritual. His tea strategy stands in contrast to the dungeon’s other threats: poisoned cakes, the level-five Zombie of Cheshire in a lower-level dungeon, and the dangerous Dungeon Core of the Wonderland Dungeon with its Evil Root. Against those hazards, Broccoli uses magic or combat; at Fort Frogger, he makes room for conversation.

The action therefore works as an inversion of the conventional threshold trial. The ruined gate, Skeleton Knights, and Throat Ripper resemble threshold guardians, but they do not need to be defeated for the threshold to open. Broccoli crosses it by refusing the assumption that every unknown fortress must be entered through violence. His friendliness is comically awkward, and Amaryllis repeatedly corrects or restrains him, yet the awkwardness becomes an asset: it produces an interaction less threatening than a polished challenge would have been. Fort Frogger Diplomatic Entry establishes that, in Broccoli’s adventure, survival can depend on making an invitation feel safer than a sword.
